A Christmas gift
It's almost Christmas time, and for most of us, the hunt for that perfect gift, the one we believe will truly delight the recipient, is in full swing. My lovely daughter, Alex, used to craft meticulous lists, adorned with highlights and stars next to the items she couldn't do without. She would eagerly hand me that piece of paper, guiding me to purchase the exact gift she desired. Nowadays, my grandchildren maintain Amazon wish lists, and finding the ideal present is just a click away for me. No more navigating packed parking lots, competing for elusive spaces.
While receiving gifts is always a delightful surprise, in my view, the most precious gift of all lies in the simple act of being present during these cherished holidays. The days when my entire family gathered together have become distant memories. We used to celebrate on the 24th, strolling through the neighborhood, visiting friends, and extending warm Christmas wishes. Houses were always brimming with family, food, and music. Regardless of their means, every household had something to offer, be it a morsel of food or a drink, before you headed home. The festive spirit permeated every home, whether rich or humble, and how I wish my children and grandchildren could have savored those moments.
This Christmas, we will come together at my son's home, and though our numbers may be few, I am determined to kindle the Christmas spirit within our hearts, just as my ancestors did when they celebrated Christmas Eve. I carry their gifts within me, expressed through my words and actions, and I am committed to passing them down to the generations that follow. I am making the Sangria for the gathering so we will toast to our ancestors and celebrate the new traditions the family is adopting without forgetting the traditions that were passed down. Most of all, we will celebrate the gift of Jesus presence in our hearts.
